Day 12 - Sept 8, 2017: Falaise to Switzerland
Brettville-sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery
First stop of the day was to the Brettville-sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery near Falaise. This CWGC cemetery contains 2958 burials - 2792 of which are Canadian, 87 are unidentified. These were the soldiers that fought in the Normandy region in the eight weeks following the Normandy invasion. Each of the units of the Canadian Army's 2nd Corps are represented here.
We discovered approximately 50 graves that belonged to Calgary Highlanders that all died on 1 August 1944. The most touching of them was that of Private F.F. Taylor who died at the age of 16 years.
On to Switzerland
From there it was straight on to Switzerland for an overnight stay. Switzerland is beautiful with it's villages cropping up on hillsides; sharp, winding switchbacks; lush green mountain pastures with dairy cows munching away - the large bells hanging around their necks clanging away... Pretty idyllic!
So young :(
