Day 8 - Sept 4, 2017: Stonehenge to the South Coast


10th Battalion (Calgary) training on the Salisbury Plains - marching at Stonehenge. 

We started the day with a trip to Stonehenge. Not only does it have its own history, being approximately 5,000 years old, but our boys trained in the same location.. Note in the picture Stonehenge was going under some remedial repairs. And today here is what it looks like:

Day 10 - Sep 6, 2017: Normandy and Area with Pictures

Day 10 -  Sept 6, 2017:  Normandy and Area  Arques la Bataille British Military Cemetery We passed by a the Arques la Bataille British War Cemetery and decided to check it out. It was on the top of a hill overlooking the countryside enroute to Normandy, not far from our B&B. This cemetery, as are all other CWGC cemeteries, was well groomed, neat and abundant with flowers. It was filled primarily with members from the South African Labour Camps as well as Chinese labourers and a few members of the Indian navy from the Great War. Le Grand Bunker Musee at Ouistreham We moved on to the Grand Bunker Museum at Ouistreham. On display here is a landing craft that was restored for the movie "Saving Private Ryan".  Standing inside gives you a feel for just how unprotected the soldiers were. There is extremely little keel to these and are basically a flat bottomed boat. It would be a bear to steer and would truly be at the mercy of the winds and seas. This...

Day 29 - Sept 25, 2017

Day 29 - Sept 25, 2017:  Paris to Opole, Poland Note: Edits and photos to follow. It was a day of travel. We flew into Kraków, grabbed our rental car and drove approximately two hours to Opole. We stayed at the Hotel de Silva and must say this is a top notch hotel. We were treated to a gourmet Polish dinner in their restaurant that was incredibly prepared and had unbelievable flavour for under $20.00. The service was exceptional and we had a lady playing lounge music on the piano. The whole thing was terrific!
